Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009

Price Range
$17.50 - $43.0

Overall Evaluation: I like it, look Good works Good, Price is right for a change. Looks like Norton may have learned its lesson when customers started bailing out a few years back. People want an easy to use Security Suite that doesnt use 1/3 of you PCs RAM. at idle. I geuss a few of the companies are coming to their senses now that there is compitition from ESET and others that make their software compact and fast

Automatic Updates Are a Step Too Far

Analysis: Pushing security patches is a fast way to fix vulnerabilities, but Microsoft goes too far.
Neil McAllister, InfoWorld

It's an unpleasant fact: Programmers write buggy code. It's not their fault. Given the complexity of modern software development platforms, bugs are inevitable. What matters is that programmers acknowledge bugs when they arise and that they take steps to correct them before they can cause any harm.

Case in point: Internet Explorer. Microsoft's browser has long been recognized as a major vector for malware and other exploits, owing to its infamously permissive design and a seemingly endless string of security vulnerabilities. So when Microsoft released a critical security update to IE in mid-April, it should have been cause for celebration. Microsoft's developers were doing their jobs. Another security hole had been closed.

[ Roger A. Grimes is skeptical of iron-clad browser security in his blog post, "The curious case of the invulnerable Web browser" | Learn more about securing your systems with InfoWorld's Security Adviser blog and newsletter. ]

Except the update wasn't just another security patch. It was Internet Explorer 8 -- an entirely new, major-numbered version of the browser. Users who agreed to install it found that it took the place of their old version of IE. Users who didn't ... well, they would have to be brave enough to ignore a "critical security update." Decisions, decisions.

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate

Price Range $75.95 - $403.0

Duration of ownership:1 Months
Strengths: Speed, user friendly, backups, media center, very fast start up / shut down, features for business and home, 64 bit capability.
Weaknesses: Had to do some tweaking at first to get it to run correctly, there were some issues with 64 bit software unavailable for some hardware ... now that it is fine tuned, very reliable. Not everyone will want to do the work involved to figure out what is causing the instabilities to fix the problems and make their system stable, I spent several days of being up until 1am with many blue screens of problems to do it. Before fine tuning, was very unstable. This is why only 4 stars ... should not have to tweek so much to get reliable system on a freshly built system with all new "vista compatible" system. Even items that were vista compatible did not always have correct software, some were not compatible with 64 bit version.
Overall Evaluation: Now that we have it all tweeked, we love it, and we do not have any problems with it, very stable. It's a lot of fun and with the 64 bit, I can use all of my installed RAM, it's screamin fast! It was worth all of the tweaking to get here ... but might not be worth the work for some.

Windows 7 Speeds on Solid State Drives

Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday gave a strong, though qualified, endorsement for running Windows 7 on PCs equipped with solid-state disk (SSD) drives, saying it has tuned the upcoming operating system to run faster on the still-emerging storage technology.
At the same time, Microsoft admitted that it has not solved two lingering problems that can cause SSDs -- mostly lower-end, older ones -- to perform sluggishly or even worse than conventional hard drives.
Out of the box, Windows 7 should install and "operate efficiently on SSDs without requiring any customer intervention," Microsoft distinguished engineer Michael Fortin wrote in a posting at the Engineering Windows 7 blog.
